Women & Philanthropy awarded $22,600 to Ohio State’s First-Year Leadership Collaborative, a yearlong program that supports students in their transition into university life and helps them develop leadership skills. The grant will aid the university in offering this unique program, now in its fifth year, to 30 additional high-ability, low-income first-year students, raising the number of participants to 100.
The Leadership Collaborative enhances first-year students’ experiences at the university as they link classroom learning to their campus and community roles. Students in the program, who represent a broad range of academic abilities and racial and ethnic backgrounds, learn from a four-day conference, a leadership class in the John Glenn School of Public Affairs, one-on-one mentoring, and monthly activities.
“Participation in the Leadership Collaborative prepares students to seek out and engage in leadership opportunities early in their Ohio State careers, with the expectation that they will have a positive impact on the first-year class and the entire student body during their tenure at Ohio State,” says Dr. Mabel G. Freeman, assistant vice president for undergraduate admissions and First Year Experience. “Students learn to interact with executives, legislators and leaders from a variety of fields.”
The Leadership Collaborative provides an early foundation upon which students can continue to build skills and ultimately become our future community, state and world leaders.
