The John Glenn School of Public Affairs at Ohio State received $19,210 from Women & Philanthropy for NEW Leadership Ohio, a program that empowers college women in Ohio to make a difference by assuming roles of public leadership.

At no cost to participants, the weeklong residential summer program provides students with classes and hands-on workshops, as well as a network of peers and political leaders who share a commitment to public leadership. Approximately 30 participants representing a variety of personal backgrounds and college majors are instructed and inspired by a faculty that includes accomplished public officials, issues advocates, and educators.

“Women are more than half of the country’s population but are underrepresented in political office,” says Charles R. Wise, director of the John Glenn School of Public Affairs. “Short- and long-term social change for women and girls is possible when women have a greater voice in political decision-making, when they are not ‘recipients of services’ but rather architects of programs and priorities.”

NEW Leadership Ohio seeks to inspire young women to see themselves as agents of change in their communities.

“We are deeply appreciative to receive a Women & Philanthropy award,” Wise says. “NEW Leadership Ohio is an effort to build a new generation of women in politics and policymaking, from the local level to the White House. We could not reach our goals without the generous support of Women & Philanthropy.”
