The College of Education & Human Ecology’s Schoenbaum Family Center received $34,314 to support its groundbreaking approach to addressing the needs of young children and their families in Weinland Park, an economically challenged neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio.

Under the direction of Dean David Andrews, the center was created to develop new models for serving families and children in similar neighborhoods across the country.

“Women & Philanthropy’s investment in Weinland Park will reach well beyond the boundaries of this Central Ohio neighborhood,” said Dean Andrews. “The facility and its programs, combined with its integrated community planning process, will be a model of community redevelopment that can be implemented in other regions of the state and country.”

The 47,000-square-feet center was designed to meet the unique needs of every child enrolled, train Ohio State students to be extraordinary teachers and care providers in early childhood education, and create new knowledge related to the growth and development of children through research. Its features include motor activity space, conference rooms, family advocacy offices, a kitchen and dining facility, a wellness center, a classroom for university students, and research and observation galleries.

The Schoenbaum Family Center at Weinland Park was created through Ohio State’s partnerships with Columbus Public Schools, the City of Columbus, private industry, local service providers, private donors, and concerned citizens and neighbors.

“All of our partners are committed to serving the community and conducting the research necessary to expand our knowledge about how to better nurture our children and families in high-risk neighborhoods,” Dean Andrews said. “I cannot say enough about the strength of this partnership, particularly the involvement of Women & Philanthropy.”
