“Ohio State students are bright, talented individuals who want to make a difference in the world.”
When selecting what college she would attend, Cara Laviola was sure she would head out of state. But after one visit to Ohio State, the Columbus, Ohio, native was “completely blown away,” she says. “After three years here, I can’t imagine being anywhere else.” Now a senior, Cara is pursuing degrees in business administration and English, and hopes to work in publishing or public relations after graduation.
Why did you choose to attend Ohio State?
The Ohio State University was actually my last choice for college. Growing up, I was completely against coming to Ohio State. My mother and grandmother came here, and I was convinced that I wanted to be different. I wanted to go out of state and attend a university that I believed had prestige. But then, my mother forced me to come to an honors visit, and I was completely blown away by the Fisher College of Business and everything else that Ohio State has to offer. From the study abroad opportunities, to the unique opportunities I would get as an honors student, Ohio State became a perfect fit. When I got home that day, my decision was clear. I was coming to Ohio State. After three years here, I can’t imagine being anywhere else.
What have been some of the highlights of your Ohio State experience?
- Taking Philosophy 242H as a freshman. It was a philosophy of film class, and we watched and discussed such movies as The Dark Knight, Lars and the Real Girl, Solaris, and Groundhog Day. It was the best way to fulfill my visual/performing arts GEC requirement!
- Hanging out on “Oval Beach” during spring and summer quarter
- Researching in the Rare Books and Manuscripts collection for one of my English classes. I was able to use and touch materials from the 19th century. Very cool!
- 2009 football season when the band played "Thriller" and danced during the Halloween game
- Rushing Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity with my 12 pledge brothers
What have your scholarships enabled you to do that you otherwise couldn’t have afforded?
My scholarships have enabled me to actually have spending money during my Ohio State experience. If not for my scholarships, I would not be able to take advantage of all the opportunities that Ohio State has to offer. Instead of doing community service or serving as content editor of the business magazine, I would have had to work. My scholarships have definitely given me a life during my college experience.
What would you say to a potential donor, to encourage them to give?
Your donation will definitely not go to waste. Ohio State students are bright, talented individuals who want to make a difference in the world. Your donation helps to make their dreams a reality. After a few years, I hope to give a donation. Ohio State has given so much to me, it is only right that I give something back. |
